I have gotten intrigued by this great crooked WVa tune, Little Rose is Gone. I would like to learn it, ideally by ear (these kinds of tunes don't seem to lend themselves to learning by notation). It seems rare out there. I have it on Jim Taylor's Civil War album, but it's on hammered dulcimer. On the Milliner-Koken tune list, I found two sources, Lee Triplett and Wilson Douglas, though they seem to differ in some details. They are a little rough to learn by (as a beginner/intermediate). Which one is most commonly played?
I found the Chance McCoy recording, but it is in a different key than the other sources. When I can play it, I'd like to be doing the same thing as the person I might happen to play it with. If it is the only one out there, I guess one option is to get it and load it into my slow-downer/pitch changer if I want it in the other key.
Suggestions?
