I've been looking for a good sounding mic for recording violin/fiddle (at least one that I can afford).. The one that I'd like to eventually get is the Coles 4038, until then I've had some success with the DPA 4099V. It's a good mic, but it's only a part of the whole equation for recording a nice tone. Pairing the DPA with the Headway EDB-1 preamp worked pretty well. Both products are great. I've had a lot of experience with fiddle preamps and the Headway is one of the best. I use the Grace Design Alix for live gigs, but the Headway sounded better with the DPA. I'm playing a Realist RV 4PE pro model fiddle which has a decent acoustic tone with Prastro obligatos and Warchal Amber E.
I'm wondering what others have used for recording fiddle (mics and premps).
Thanks for looking
