Country Fiddle

Who can offer me some advice? I've been playing for just over a year.

I have a teacher who teaches old time and I enjoy that music greatly, but I've been bitten by

a bug, the other night I saw a country band with a really good fiddle player. Rare in my area of the north east.

I couldn't see too well but I really liked his style on a Hank Williams Jr song. Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound as well as others.

It looked and sounded like he was in third position and I've tried to play in first and third position in G using different double stops

for each chord, Root, 5 and 3 5 etc. however it is missing something, I can't put my finger on it. Is there some super secret scale or combination of

notes to make up the double stops other than the root, 3rd and 5th combos? I find sliding into my double stops helps.

My teacher has no interest or experience in this style of music.
